Madaba

18/12/08
My group of 47 persons had the chance to visit Paul's Mosaic Factory in the Jordanian Handcraft Centre. Our guide Paul was an ex-seminarian and he opened up this centre to provide work for the handicapped in Madaba. He explained how the pieces of Mosaic was made ... very labour intensive.... and the skill needed to set the art pieces up. They are all made out of the natural mosaic colors. Madaba in fact is the centre of mosaic art. This tradition of mosaic art is preserved by the local Jordanians. Tourists like us help to support them too when we purchase these mosaic art pieces. I bought 2 small pieces which cost me US$ 60 and of course the the larger pieces cost more.

Here you can see the beautiful mosaic art pieces having the biblical themes.

We visited the Greek Orthodox St. George's Church which has the finest Byzantine mosaic in the world. The oldest Palestinian map of the Holy Land made out of mosaic in the 6th Century can be admired here in the church ground. There were also many beautiful mosaic pieces on the walls of the church too.

Our tour in Jordan ended with a city tour in the bus and we had some camera moments when we stopped at the ruins of a Greek Theatre.
